Step back in time and immerse yourself in the elegance of Napier and Hawke’s Bay on this unforgettable five-day spring journey. From stylish vintage car tours and world-class wineries to breathtaking wildlife encounters and historic estates & gardens, this itinerary blends luxury, adventure, and historic charm.
Thursday 18 September. We arrive in Napier late morning and head to Linden Estate, where we enjoy a warm welcome lunch surrounded by the picturesque vines of Esk Valley.
After lunch, we travel through scenic rural roads into Napier City, where a vintage car enthusiast takes us on a stylish tour. Along the way, we hear fascinating commentary on the 1931 earthquake, the city’s rebuild, and its iconic Art Deco design. Our journey includes exclusive stops at the stunning Napier Municipal Theatre and the renowned National Tobacco Company building. We then drive through Marewa, a charming suburb built on land raised by the earthquake, showcasing beautiful 1930s homes.
Later, we check in for our four-night stay at the Art Deco Masonic Hotel, a boutique hotel offering panoramic Pacific Ocean views and easy access to Napier’s vibrant city center and unique shops.
Lunch, Dinner.
Friday 19 September. Today’s adventure begins with a 4WD safari in Te Awanga, taking us through pristine coastline, working farms, and native bush to New Zealand’s largest privately-owned nature reserve. At the top of Cape Kidnappers Gannet Colony, we witness over 20,000 gannets nesting, preening, and soaring right before our eyes.
After our safari, we indulge in a delightful high tea lunch at Mangapapa, once the home of Sir James and Lady Wattie. Set amidst stunning spring gardens, this elegant experience offers a touch of timeless charm.
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Saturday 20 September. This morning, we return to Te Awanga for a visit to Cape Sanctuary, where we gain insight into vital conservation efforts. We’ll have up-close encounters with takahē, kākāriki, giant wētā, tuatara, and more while learning about sand-dune restoration, coastal revegetation, and species translocations.
Next, we visit the breathtaking Craggy Range Estate, an iconic winery nestled at the base of Te Mata Peak—the very place where Dame Jacinda Ardern ‘tied the knot’. We’ll uncover the fascinating story of owner Terry Peabody, stroll through picturesque grounds adorned with unique sculptures, and tour the fermentation rooms and cellars. Wine lovers can indulge in a tasting of the prestigious Prestige Collection, with alternative beverages available.
Tonight, dress to impress as we head to the historic Mission Estate Winery for an elegant dinner in a truly spectacular setting.
Breakfast, Dinner.
Sunday 28 September. Today, we enjoy a delightful tour of historic homes in the region, guided by our friend John Vickers, a passionate expert on New Zealand heritage. His deep knowledge and enthusiasm bring these properties to life.
Each home showcases stunning gardens and architecture, designed by renowned architects such as Charles Natusch, Chapman Taylor, and Russell & Bignell. As we take in the vibrant bursts of spring color, we’ll enjoy a special lunch with one of the homeowners, making for a truly memorable experience.
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Monday 29 September. With bags packed, we depart the hotel for Birdwoods in Havelock North, a must-see destination. Set on a picturesque rural property, Birdwoods features a charming gallery in a historic church, a sculpture garden, an old-fashioned sweet shop, and a fabulous café, where we enjoy our farewell lunch.
After this memorable final stop, we head to Napier Airport, bidding farewell to this beautiful and bountiful region we’ve come to know so well over the past five days.

CAPE SANCTUARY
Cape Sanctuary was the brainchild of local landowners Andy and Liz Lowe, who in 2004 noticed that the bush on the peninsula was silent, the land eroding, and pest species rife. Over the next two years, with the help of renowned experts, they pulled together the vision for a privately owned and funded mainland island conservation project within a mixed-land use setting. Andy approached owner of the Cape Kidnappers farm and lodge, the late Julian Robertson who embraced the Lowe’s vision and agreed to co-fund the project.
Work began immediately on landscape-scale predator and pest control, habitat restoration and ongoing endangered species re-introduction projects.
Today the sanctuary is world leader in conservation innovation — where recreation, production and restoration occur in symbiosis.
