Dust off the winter blues and join us on this 4-day spring break away. Starting with a cruise accross the Firth of Thames this tour takes you over the Coromandel to the vibrant town of Whitianga. This unique part of New Zealand is renowned for its pristine beaches, misty forests and laid-back vibe and we learn why this is one of New Zealand’s most popular holiday destinations.

Itinerary  |  3-6 December 2022
  • DAY 1. Coromandel Cruise | Driving Creek Rail | Whitianga

All aboard! This morning we depart from Downtown Auckland on a leisurely 2-hour boat ride to Coromandel Town - a cruise that is truly ‘good for you soul’. Enjoy the laid-back vibe coupled with unspoiled natural surroundings. After a lunch stop in Coromandel we take a short drive to Driving Creek Rail to enjoy a one hour trip on NZ’s only narrow gauge mountain railway. Enjoy stunning native Kauri forest as we climb to the Eyefull Tower with panoramic views over the Coromandel.

We then travel on to the beautiful seaside town of Whitianga for our 3-night stay.

    (Dinner).

  • DAY 2. Cathedral Cove

We enjoy a leisurely start to the day as we head out on a 2-hour glass bottom boat to Cathedral Cove. Enjoy spectacular scenery including a marine reserve, seacaves, blow holes and rock formations.

This afternoon you have the option of browsing the many boutique shops of Whitianga Town or indulging yourself with a visit to the Lost Springs Spa and Thermal Pools. Surrounded by native tropical plants in the heart of Whitianga with water drawn from 667 meters underground – the crystal thermal water is just what the doctor ordered (optional extra).

Tonight we dine at a local restaurant.

    (Breakfast, Dinner).

  • DAY 3. Colenso Cafe | Hahei | Hot Water Beach

This morning we drive around to the famous Colenso Gardens and Cafe. This idyllic cafe offers an evolving menu of lovingly made food using fresh, seasonal and local produce. Indulge yourself with their delicious food choices for lunch – after-all we just came out of hibernation!

We then drive into Hahei to visit The Lawnmower’s Son Art Gallery for a chat with the owner about the stunning local art work.

Hot Water beach is calling. Wander along the beach and wiggle your toes in the warm water. From the sound of its surging waves to the fierce bite of hot sand underneath your bare feet at low tide, Hot Water Beach presents a landscape and an experience like nowhere else.

We then enjoy afternoon tea at a local cafe before our drive back to Whitianga. Tonight we enjoy dinner with the locals at the Mercury Bay Game Fishing Club.

    (Breakfast, Dinner).

  • DAY 4. Thames | Homeward Bound

We pack our back and make our way around the coast road to Thames. We stop for lunch before taking a guided tour through an operational 19th Century Stamper Battery – one of the richest gold mines of it’s time.

Back in Auckland we say our final farewells and trust you have enjoyed a holiday to remember with Seemore Tours - where we ‘do more’, ‘eat more’, ‘see more’ and have more fun.

"So pleased we did this trip. Mark was friendly and very informative and we learned a lot about the history of the area, saw stunning scenery, and observed beautiful fish in crystal clear water. Such a great way to spend the morning. Highly recommended!"

Coromandel Town's wonderfully whimsical Driving Creek Railway

There's a tract of hilly land above Coromandel Town that the Department of Conservation might want to keep a careful eye on.

It abuts the 60-acre (24ha) property that's home to the wonderfully whimsical Driving Creek Railway — renowned New Zealand potter Barry Brickell's decades-long labour of love.

What began in 1975 as a purely practical endeavour to transport clay dug from the land's hills to Brickell's workshop, soon morphed into a project of ever-increasing scale.

As Paul Swanwick, a former local policeman who now drives the trains, explains, Brickell "found he rather enjoyed the laying of the track and knew he had 60 acres to fill up, so he decided to continue".
