We start this adventure with a flight from Wellington then another flight to Picton on Sounds Air. On arrival we transfer to the Picton Yacht Club for a one night stay – this hotel has spectacular vistas over Marlborough Sounds, and is the ideal destination to rest and relax after a day of travel.

Tonight, we enjoy a refreshing pre-dinner beverage at the charming on-site Boatshed Bar before a relaxed meal at the hotel restaurant.

After breakfast we check out of the Yacht Club catch the Cougar Line boat to Lochmara. Lochamara is more than just a place to stay and is a locally owned and operated resort set right on the water’s edge in Marlborough Sounds. Here we experience a way of life with no roads and plenty of activities. 

During the afternoon we take a tour of Lochmara’s exciting new underwater observatory, feed fascinating stingrays and be delighted by NZ marine life in the seaside touch tank.

Today, we depart Lochmara and head back to Picton. We have some time to wander around town and enjoy lunch before boarding another Cougar Line boat for our next transfer to The Portage.

The Portage is set amongst a rustic landscape of native plants with an abundance of birdlife to be seen as you submerge yourself into nature. Relax, unwind and switch off from the rest of the world and enjoy being in a remote part of the Sounds, simply enjoying your surroundings.

We depart the Portage at 10.30am arriving at Ferneaux Lodge at 11.30am. This is the start of the mail run for us. By the time we get back to Picton on the Sunday we will have done the full mail run trip.

Ferneux Lodge is located at the head of Endeavour Inlet and has a picturesque backdrop of native forest and lush rolling lawns right to the stunning green-blue waters edge.

After a night at Ferneaux Lodge we board the Mail Run for a night at Punga Cove. Punga Cove is set amongst the eternal stunning scenery that the magnificent Marlborough Sounds has to offer. Surrounded by nature, Punga Cove is the perfect retreat for the day.

Today, we finish our exploration of the Malborough Sounds and return to Picton for our final night. You can either relax and enjoy the afternoon by the water or wander around town. If you’d like to do a bit more sightseeing we can see what tours are available for the afternoon.

Today we bid our farewells to this beautiful part of the country and take an Air Sounds flight back to Wellington and home again.
