Today we leave behind the big towns for three plush nights at the unique Chateau Tongariro.
Surrounded by the sacred peaks of Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro, Chateau Tongariro Hotel exudes a timeless elegance deeply rooted in New Zealand’s heritage. Occupying a prime spot in Tongariro National Park, the hotel honours the gracious gift of tribal land to the people of New Zealand in 1887.
We arrive in the early afternoon and here, you can relax in front of a large open fire, read a book or contemplate life over a warm mulled wine. The evening will deliver an indulgent gourmet dinner and with fingers crossed, we may even get some snow.
Dinner.
Put on your winter woollies, this morning we drive to the top of the Bruce – Whakapapa’s ski base on the magnificent Mt Ruapehu. Here you have the option to take a ride on NZ’s largest and most technically advanced gondola, Whakapapa’s state-of-the-art Sky Waka. This spectacular ride takes you over striking, snow covered, volcanic terrain with views across Tongariro National Park. (Gondola ride is an optional extra).
Afterwards we warm up our cockles back at the beautiful Chateau Tongariro for an elegant and delightful high tea lunch. Then, enjoy your afternoon relaxing with a book, playing a game of Billiards or taking a walk and exploring the surrounding area.
Later, we enjoy a pre-dinner drink before an indulgent Christmas feast (with a few surprises added in).
Breakfast. Lunch. Dinner.
This morning we visit the Tongariro National Trout Centre. We have a guided tour by a local resident and hear about the history of trout fishing in New Zealand followed by a short drive to Creel Tackle House and Café for lunch (own expense). The tackle shop was established in the 1920’s by a famous guide, Joe Frost and is now owned by Grant and Deb Alley. The shop is the only remaining commercial survivor from the original sleepy village of Turangi.
After our return to the Chateau, you may like to have a rest before our farewell dinner and fun quiz. Even if you’re not a quizzer we’ll need you to fill in the gaps!
Breakfast. Dinner.
Today we say farewell to this beautiful part of Aotearoa and the Chateau Tongariro. We drive to National Park train station and join the Northern Explorer homeward bound – a trip that never fails to please even if you’ve done the journey before.
The dining carriage has a great food and beverage selection and you’ll watch the countryside slip by, relaxed and happy, after a very merry, indulgent trip away.
Back in Auckland we say farewell to our fellow travellers and take home some great memories of what is a true Kiwi Mid Winter Christmas.
