Experience the epic landscapes and changing scenery of New Zealand’s Forgotten World.

Join us as we explore the sights by Rail Cart down the Forgotten World Railway, hear the stories of hardy pioneers and off the beaten path communities in one of New Zealand’s most stunning North Island destinations. Follow this with an indulgent stay at the Chateau Tongariro and an amazing journey home as you travel by train from Ohakune back to Auckland.

Itinerary
  • DAY 1. Auckland | Taumarunui

We depart Auckland in the morning and head south to Taumarunui - the heart of the king country. First we visit Laurens Lavender Farm for afternoon tea and then check into the Forgotton Highway Motel. Tonight we enjoy dinner at the local RSA.

    Dinner

  • DAY 2. Rail Cart Journey | National Park

It’s an early morning start today as we head off on a 40km rail cart journey which inlcudes 10 tunnels and 20 bridges. Our lunch today will be on the rails in the middle of nowhere! Afterwards, we’re whisked off on a 23km Jet Boat ride on the Whanganui River – a mixture of nostalgia and adrenaline.

After our adventure we take a short one hour trip to the specatular National Park for two luxurious nights at the Chateau Tongariro.

Tonight, you can enjoy a sophisticated dinner in the Ruapehu Room under the glow of shimmering chandeliers.

    Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

  • DAY 3. Gondola | High Tea Lunch

Put on your winter woollies, this morning we drive to the top of the Bruce – Whakapapa’s ski base on the magnificent Mt Ruapehu. Here you have the option to take a ride on Whakapapa’s new state-of-the-art Sky Waka. This spectacular gondola ride takes you over striking, volcanic terrain with views across Tongariro National Park - an impressive trip we can personally guarantee.

Afterwards, we warm up our cockles at the Chateau for an elegant and delightful high tea lunch, followed with another indulgent dinner.

    Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

  • DAY 4. Ohakune | Auckland

Today we say farewell to this beautiful part of Aotearoa and the Chateau Tongariro as we drive to Ohakune and explore the town, the famous big carrot and enjoy lunch at a local cafe. In the early afternoon we board the Northern Explorer homeward bound – a trip that never fails to please even if you’ve done the journey before.

    Breakfast

This is a REALLY enjoyable experience! Don't think this is just for older people - it is a lot of fun for all ages. From check in, to the end of the day, the staff are all great, knowledgeable, friendly, up for a chat, and happy to dispense advice about the local area. The jet boat ride isn't the shotover, but it is nonetheless a lot of fun, but its the rail carts that are the star - how many experiences let you drive your own train? Hard to explain why, but this is the kind of experience that stays with you long after you have finished."

"We love this part of the country and we try to spend most of the winter with the family in Ohakune. On occasions, we often sneak away to the Chateau Tongariro and indulge ourselves in their delectable High Tea experience. Recent Seemore Tours travellers have also raved about the gondola trip and is an absolute must for anyone visiting this part of the country"
